We are looking for restorative volunteers to assist us with referral order panels for local children

We work with councils to facilitate referral order panels in Derby City, Nottinghamshire County and Nottingham City for Children who have been sentenced to a Youth Referral Order.

We are looking for people who can work restoratively allowing all parties to feel

Safe, Valued, Heard, and Included.

Your role would be to assist, be an independent voice and represent the community in helping the young person ‘make things right’ for those harmed by their actions.

This involves facilitating initial panels to help the young person and family identify needs and strategies as part of their order, review panels every 12 weeks and a final panel to celebrate the end of the journey and the progress made.

Full training is provided and we will support you to excel in the role.

Panels usually last around an hour and they are all co-ordinated to your availability. Some are online and some in person – again we tailor to your preferences.

DBS checks will be undertaken (Adult and Children )

We are currently recruiting new volunteers and have our training sessions running regularly.

Completed applications to be sent to: [email protected]

What skills do I need?

What we need:

• People who can listen to others

• People who want to help other people

• People who are motivated to make a positive change in people’s lives

• People who want to use the skills they already have, and build on them

• People who want to help us develop the service and raise its profile

This is a rewarding role and is very flexible.

We ask for your approximate availability, locations you can travel to and keep this on file so we know to ask you if a panel comes up when you might be free. You can then say yes or no depending on the date and how it fits with your plans.

We ask volunteers to commit to one panel per month (usually around an hour) Panels are usually on weekdays between 9am and 5pm but there are some exceptions to this.

Review panels are every 12 weeks and these are booked with you at a time to suit you at the previous panel.

Youth referral orders are anywhere between 3 and 12 months.

Panels are held at locations close to the child’s home usually at community centres, libraries, council buildings. We require people from across the County and City territories as we will only ask you to travel distances you are comfortable with.

We want future focussed, positive, people who can engage with children and help them design a plan for their success. Our work focuses on the ‘why’ the offence has happened and ‘how’ to prevent this happening again.

The panels will be led by the community panel members using the Remedi ‘Making it Right’ model and the case managers from the youth justice teams will help with the solutions of what can be offered to the child and the family.
