Help us deliver our excellent events at our flagship Spring Fair and Christmas Market held at the Main College, and contribute to making a positive impact in the community.

We are a national charity that is committed to providing opportunities for people with disabilities and by you joining us as a Volunteer Events Support Assistant, you will be he contributing to the success of various events throughout the year to help fundraise for our fantastic Charity.


What skills do I need?

Essential Skills:

  • Event setup and logistics: Ability to help arrange and dismantle event spaces, including setting up equipment and decorations.
  • Teamwork and collaboration: Work effectively with other volunteers and the Events team to ensure smooth event execution.
  • Effective communication skills: Clearly convey information and instructions to participants and other team members.
  • Customer service: Provide a friendly and helpful experience for event attendees, addressing their needs and queries.
  • Problem-solving: Quickly address and resolve issues that arise during the event to minimise disruptions.
  • Adaptability and flexibility: Handle various tasks as needed and adjust to changing event conditions or requirements.
  • Organisational skills: Manage multiple tasks efficiently, ensuring all aspects of the event are well-coordinated.
  • Engagement in fundraising activities: Assist in running and promoting fundraising events like raffles and tombolas.
  • Health and safety awareness: Follow safety protocols to ensure a secure environment for all event participants.
  • Cultural sensitivity and inclusion: Ensure that all attendees, including those with disabilities, feel welcomed and respected.

Desirable Skills:

  • Event planning experience: Familiarity with event coordination can enhance your effectiveness in supporting event activities.
  • Public speaking: Comfort with making announcements or guiding groups through event activities.

The Volunteer Events Assistant position is designed to be flexible and ad-hoc, reflecting the dynamic nature of the events hosted by Portland Charity. While you will have guaranteed opportunities to assist at our annual Spring Fair and Christmas Market, the role is primarily on an as-needed basis for various other events throughout the year. Key Points: Spring Fair and Christmas Market: These are the two main events you will be consistently involved in, providing a stable schedule and clear expectations. Ad-hoc Events: Beyond these major events, your involvement will vary based on the charity’s needs. Additional events may arise throughout the year, and support will be requested on a flexible, as-needed basis. Dynamic Scheduling: Be prepared for occasional, unscheduled events and activities that may require your assistance. This role offers the opportunity to engage in diverse events while providing the flexibility to accommodate your personal schedule.
